The Story of Tanu – Featherlight Plain-Weave Cashmere

Tanu – a name that evokes softness, stillness, and quiet warmth. In Sanskrit, it refers to something fine, delicate, and subtle – much like the feeling of wrapping yourself in this featherlight shawl.

Among the many forms of handcrafted cashmere, Tanu stands out for its pure restraint and sublime touch. Woven in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, this shawl is defined by its classic plain weave – a technique so understated, it allows the essence of the fiber to speak for itself.

Unlike the twilled texture of our Laya shawls, Tanu reveals a flat, fluid surface that feels almost weightless against the skin. Measuring approximately 70 × 200 cm, it is larger than Laya, yet just as elegant and refined. The increased surface offers a generous drape – ideal for those who seek lightness without compromise.

The shawl is crafted entirely by hand in our Nepali atelier in Kathmandu, in close collaboration with one of the country’s most respected weaving houses. Each piece is woven slowly, intentionally, and with profound respect for the raw material, which includes carefully selected Himalayan and Mongolian cashmere.

The result is a companion that feels like a second skin – gentle, warm, and intimately yours. Tanu is not the lightest shawl in the Nepali Essence line, but it is among the softest. Its strength lies in balance: between size and airiness, elegance and everyday use.

Whether worn as a minimalist statement, a trusted layer for travel, or a personal refuge during colder months, Tanu is a modern classic – one that reflects the quiet philosophy of vonoz: simplicity, perfected over time.

All Tanu shawls are unembellished, unpretentious, and unmistakably personal. Each one is slightly different due to the natural variation in the yarns and the handweaving process – a quiet celebration of imperfection and uniqueness.
