What Makes Classic Shawls Different from Kani Shawls?

Not all cashmere shawls are created alike. At vonoz cashmere, we honor multiple traditions of weaving — from the quiet simplicity of classic Kashmiri shawls to the elaborate storytelling of Kani shawls. Both are handmade, both are heirlooms — but their character, technique, and purpose differ profoundly.

Classic Shawls: Texture and Purity

Classic Kashmiri shawls are woven from handspun yarn, often undyed or minimally treated. Their beauty lies in the subtlety of weave and the natural texture of the fiber. Light, breathable, and elegant, they speak in muted tones — ideal for layering, styling, or gifting across generations.

Kani Shawls: Color and Complexity

Kani weaving is a centuries-old art that uses tiny wooden spools — called kanis — to insert colored weft threads with mathematical precision. The result is a fully patterned textile, rich in detail and symbolism. Kani shawls take months, sometimes years, to complete — and represent the pinnacle of decorative cashmere weaving.

Weaving Technique

While classic shawls are woven on standard looms with shuttle-based motion, Kani shawls are woven "pixel by pixel", guided by a coded pattern called a talim. This makes Kani weaving not only more time-intensive, but also a more collaborative effort — often requiring two master weavers working in perfect harmony.

Purpose and Presence

Classic shawls invite intimacy and softness. Kani shawls command admiration. One whispers. The other sings. Both belong in a wardrobe — but for different moods, moments, and meanings.
